I just moved to Korea. Last night, I finally found somebody to go do something with. Bowling! Its relatively inexpensive on the military bases so I'm thinking I'll be doing quite a bit of bowling over here.
I think my highest score ever is something like 168. Last night I got a 150! I've always just shot for breaking 100.
I wonder if I should buy my own ball and shoes. But how do you choose a ball? And should I learn to start throwing the curve? Would that change the kind of ball I get?

I had to teach myself to bowl. I watched tournaments on tv, and had to try to remember everything and process it backwards because I'm a leftie and they were all right handed bowlers. Anyway, my piddly average is the 120's and my high game was 178. Never been able to hit that again though. I love to bowl but don't get the chance to very often. i guess I need to force the issue and make time. I want that 178 again! LOL Ok that's my story.

Fri, February 8, 2008 - 5:31 PMI had some limited luck getting the hook to work. We bowled about 6 games and now my wrist is pretty sore! :) I am not positive what I was doing wrong but I *think* it has something to do with my release point and how I tend to *push* the ball down there. The spin isn't going side to side as much as its going head over heals almost. I have to concentrate more on finesse.
After all that practice, I'll watch the video again and try again. Don't know if I'll go today or not, having a sore wrist might make me throw too weird. But i might be able to be talked into it if the bowling partner comes knocking.
When I get better I'm going to buy a ball. I'm excited about this new hobby! -

Fri, February 8, 2008 - 5:34 PMI've noticed a lot of people who throw the hook are using a really light ball and they really wing it down there. Seems easier to do but not very accurate. Also, the ball sometimes just ricochets off the pins. Following the video's instructions, I'm using a 15 lb. ball and I guess that's why my wrist is a bit sore. -

Fri, February 8, 2008 - 7:16 PMI definately would let the wrist relax before bowling again. You don't want prolonged damage. You might also need to get a bowling wrist support if your wrist keeps getting sore. They're pretty inexpensive.
I started with a 10 pound ball and am now up to a 14 pound ball. Being left handed, I had to buy my own ball and shoes before I could even try bowling. You just can't rent them at the lanes. I highly recomend getting your own ball if you want consistancy because every ball handles differently and using the same one every time increases your accuracy and technique. Even a cheap ball will help you find your groove. You don't have to go all out and buy the expensive stuff at first. Just get your own gear so you get the same feel everytime you bowl.
As for the hook, I have no idea how to help you there. I bowl "old school". Nothing fancy, just shoot strait and knock 'em down. seems to work for me. -

Sat, February 9, 2008 - 9:02 PMI did go again yesterday. The sore wrist might have helped my practice, because it forced me to focus on finesse instead of powering the ball down there. I am getting the hook to work pretty well, without being out of control. Still, it was most of the time just a baby hook. I was probably favoring the wrist too much.
The long weekend is over, so the next time i get to go bowling I should be nice and rested. I'm curious to see how I'll do then. -

Mon, February 11, 2008 - 8:04 PMYou really don't want to force a hook. Each bowler has his/her own delivery that will cause different style hooks. Until the reactive resin balls came out, I was considered a "down and in" style. I roll very hard and fast; naturally. Once I switched to the reactive balls, the hook caused by the ball was more pronounced. That being said, a friend I bowl with and I have the exact same ball that we both use on a regular basis. He has a huge hook and mine goes down on about the 7 board and snaps into the pocket at the end. Both of us use 16 lb balls and have very different deliveries. When I teach the kids, I emphasize to let the ball do the work and see what your natural release is and work from there. The key is to relax your shoulder and let your arm swing like a pendulum.

Tue, February 12, 2008 - 11:18 AMif you are using a house ball (plastic) you are never going to get it to curve very much without excessive torque on your wrist. The balls that people who have big benders use are waaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy different from house balls and they are almosyt always finger tip drilled. You need to get your own resin resister or polyurethan ball, drilled for your hands. Also, with these new fnagled balls, it matters where they dril the hoels as they have off center weight in the middle. You will enjoy bowling a great deal more with the correct equipment. One no longer needs a 16 pound ball, but I would probably not go lower than 14 pounds.
Bowling is the best fun ever!!
