Re: whats your high score?
Fri, July 21, 2006 - 7:16 AMin league I believe my high score is something like 266. My high series in league in 702.
5 pin bowling is good fun for sure. But it is extremely frustrating if you are familiar with 10 pin bowling. If I remember correctly, the scoring is indeed different as you can throw 3 times per frame in 5 pin? Although you only get added pins on teh third ball; there is no possible mark. It is scored like duckpin bowling if I remember correctly. And duckpin bowling is GREAT fun, but frustrating as well. Duckpin bowling originated in Baltimore and is primarily an east coast thing. In fact, there are not that many duckpin alleys still open. But if you ever get the chance you should try it. It is really much better for small children. The ball is much smaller, lighter and has no holes for the fingers so it is much easier to get down the lane. It is about the size of a shot put and about 4 lbs, or maybe a little ligther.

Re: whats your high score?
Sat, July 22, 2006 - 10:05 PMMy high is 264 or 265, I don't remember. It wasn't league, but was in a sacntioned tournament. So it would have counted had I rolled a perfect game.
I can occasionaly dip into the 240s and 250s, but my consistency has gone to shit since I started learning the curve, a couple of years ago. Until this last month, I was unable to roll a 600 series in league. I used to flirt with 600 as a straight bowler on a fairly regular basis, with a 185 average. But that was about the limit for straight bowling. So I made the change.
As a cranker, I hit a lot more 230s and higher, but then I'd lose my line and roll a 150. I couldn't even keep it up for three straight games. I took a couple of lessons in march, and did poorly after that. Too radical changes, and we were vying for first in the league, so I kept my old release. Then for the summer leagues, I decided to try the new one, and after a couple of weeks, my average went from a 168 at the end of the last league to 180. and a consistent 180. In the last three weeks, I've rolled a 612, 580, and 624 series. the latter is the best series I've rolled since I was 14, when I had a blind luck, straight bowling 640.
Probably not great to start out a fall league with. But the center is putting in new lanes, and that should screw up the approaches to the point that my average won't be crazy and hard to maintain going into the new leavue. -

Re: whats your high score?
Mon, July 24, 2006 - 1:49 PMI bowl without putting my thumb in the hole at all. I cup the ball with my two middle fingers barely in. I started doing this years ago because I wanted my ball to move, but used plastic house balls and it was the only way to get any curve on the ball. When I started bowling more regualarly and got my own ball, I continued bwoling like this. Well, it's now like 15 years later and I have finally developed the predictable wrist problems that everyone told me I would get. I really want to start bowling in a more traditional--thumb in the hole--method. But I can't just seem to take the devestating blow to my average. When I bowl regularly I am usually a low 190s to mid 190s average bowler (in league). I am pretty sure I would tank way way way down near 100 for awhile if I switched. It would be good in the long run, but I can never seem to find the right time to do it!!
so I know how you feel.

Re: whats your high score?
Tue, July 25, 2006 - 12:21 AMJust like there's a time and a place for everything, college, there's a perfect time to start a new way of rolling. First week of fall league, when you set your average. That's when I always wait to make a big switch, because you're starting over. Who gives a rat's ass if your average dips. Then you get to slowly improve. As long as you're bowling a handicap league, that makes you the best player on the team.
If you've got a good pro and are willing to spend a big on a ball, I'm sure that they can set you up with something that's going to be an easy transition. When you get the ball, they'll give you a few games to try it out, and you can roll a few on your own, and then you'll at least keep it on the lane and probably not dip down below 150, which is a perfect platform for a good team season.
And if anyone accuses you of sandbagging, you have a legit excuse, which is injury forcing a radical revision to your style.
